This book analyses the roots and trajectory of the recent revolts in the context of the global transformations that have redefined the politics of movement and revolution. For example, some authors engage extensively with the strategies embraced by the younger generation of activists. Others argue that the power of these revolutions lies in the people’s creative orientations including their collaborations. While much of the mobilization efforts in these different parts of the world happen through word of mouth, radio, cartoons, placards, and SMS services; sites such as Facebook helped people meet each other with a click, carrying their claims through stories, songs, poetry and art of protest across international borders quickly enabling them to rapidly bring authoritarian regimes to the brink of collapse and make a qualitatively different expression of uprisings.

All authors in this volume address the question of the stakes in these revolts, as through them, spectacular and everyday violence can be challenged, and alternative social projects can emerge. Neither a footnote to the West's history, nor an appendix to neoliberal capitalist global projects, people are actively drawing on their power to disrupt domination and oppression, creatively responding to global problems and calling for democratic institutions with viable ecologies.

The exploration of this question takes the form of a two-tier examination of three insurgent actors whose capacity to regenerate weakened in the past: the Front de libération du Québec (FLQ) of Canada, the Movimiento de Liberación Nacional - Tupamaros (MLN-T) of Uruguay and the Provisional Irish Republican Army (PIRA) of Northern Ireland during the mid-1970s.

At the first level of its examination, the book investigates the extent to which the regenerative capacities of the FLQ, MLN-T, and PIRA weakened because of an increase in attrition and a decrease in recruitment. The primary objectives of this analysis are to uncover whether a declining intake of recruits played a lesser, equal, or greater role than a burgeoning loss of personnel in weakening the capacities to regenerate of the three insurgent actors; and, in turn, to shed greater light on the broader validity of the prevailing view in conflict studies that a decrease in recruitment is more important than an increase in attrition in effecting the corrosion of an insurgent actor's capacity to regenerate.

At the second level of its exploration, the book assesses the effectiveness of five of the most prominent policy prescriptions in the literature and insurgent recruitment and attrition: ameliorating grievances, selective repression, discrediting insurgent ideology, improving intelligence collection, and restricting civil liberties

About the Author

Alan Meaden is a consultant clinical psychologist working for Birmingham and Solihull Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust and is the lead for the Trust’s Assertive Outreach and Non-Acute Inpatient Services. He has been involved in research on command hallucinations and the development of theory and practice for their treatment for over a decade. Most recently he has been the supervisor and trainer for therapists on COMMAND: the recent multicentre randomised controlled trial.

Nadine Keen is a chartered clinical psychologist on the COMMAND Trial (CBT for command hallucinations) and at the Psychological Interventions Clinic for outpatients with psychosis, South London and Maudsley Trust.

Robert Aston is a cognitive behavioural therapist at Birmingham University.

Karen Barton is a clinical psychologist at Birmingham and Solihull Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust.

Sandra Bucci is a lecturer in clinical psychology at the University of Manchester.

I enjoyed this book very much. However, this is definitely not a book for the amateur musician, and is a book that the average person would not grasp very well. It would make a great textbook for a composition course or composition master class.

I found the book both entertaining and informative. Research and references are diverse, concepts are well articulated, and the book as a whole is engaging. It is not a light read nor is it an endeavor for someone uninterested in challenging themselves; however, it is well worth the cost and time if interested in the topic. I have referenced this work of Kevin's multiple times while investigating unrelated topics ranging from agriculture to Jewish mysticism. For example, a middle age homunculus recipe -linked to bodily fluids incubated through consistent temperatures provided by composting manure- led to an idea for initiating and maintaining optimal seed germination temperatures in arctic regions. How cool is that? Very cool.

This book examines the local and international dynamics and strategies that have come to define the often violent relationship between Israel and Lebanon.

Since the end of the Cold War, academic debate over the nature of war in the contemporary world has focused upon the asymmetric nature of conflict among a raft of failed or failing states, often held together by only a fragile notion of a shared communal destiny.  Little scholarly attention has been paid, however,  to one such  conflict that predates the ending of the Cold War, yet still appears as intractable as ever: Israel’s hostile relationship with Lebanon and in particular, its standoff with the Lebanese Shi’a militia group, Hizbollah. As events surrounding the ‘Second Lebanon War’ in the summer of 2006 demonstrate, the clear  potential for further cross border violence as well as the potential for  a wider regional conflagration that embraces  Damascus and Tehran remains as acute as ever.

This book focuses on the historical background of the conflict, while also considering the role that other external actors, most notably Syria, Iran and the United Nations, play in influencing the conduct and outcomes of the Israeli-Lebanese conflict. In addition, it also looks at Hizbollah’s increasing sway in Lebanese domestic politics, its increased military cooperation with Iran and Syria, and the implications of such developments.

This book will be of much interest to students of Middle Eastern politics, War and Conflict Studies, International Security and International Relations in general.

Clive Jones is Professor of Middle East Studies and International Politics  in the School of Politics and International Studies (POLIS), University of Leeds, UK. His  books  include Soviet Jewish Aliyah 1989-92 (1996), Israel: Challenges to Democracy, Identity and the State (with Emma Murphy, 2002), and co-editor The al-Aqsa Intifada: Between Terrorism and Civil War (2005).

Sergio Catignani is Lecturer in Security and Strategic Studies and MA Programme Director for the MA in Security and Strategic Studies at the Department of Politics, University of Sussex. He is the author of Israeli Counter-Insurgency and the Intifadas: Dilemmas of a Conventional Army (2008).
