It explains how they and the federations or networks they have formed have demonstrated new approaches that have challenged adverse political relations and negotiated more effective support. Local and national governments and international agencies can become far more effective at addressing urban poverty at scale by, as is proposed in this book, working with and supporting the urban poor and their organizations.

Roger Bennett is a professor of marketing and the director of the Centre for Research in Marketing at London Metropolitan Business School, UK.

Finola Kerrigan is a lecturer in marketing at King’s College London, UK. She has published her work on arts marketing in a number of journals and scholarly books. She is chair of the Academy of Marketing’s Arts, Heritage, Nonprofit and Social Marketing Special Interest Group.

Daragh O’Reilly is a lecturer in marketing at the University of Sheffield’s Management School, in the UK. His work has appeared in a wide range of academic journals including the Journal of Marketing Management and Marketing Theory.

In his seminal 1956 paper on general systems theory, the economist Kenneth Boulding referred to the phenomenon of "specialised ears and generalised deafness", which can be seen to exist when marketing managers are financially illiterate or when financial managers lack the necessary insights to design, implement and operate accounting systems which are useful to marketing managers in carrying out their roles.

It is increasingly difficult to attach credence to the idea of marketing managers who lack financial skills, or financial managers who fail to relate to the context in which marketing managers operate. Understanding the marketing/accounting interface is therefore important in generating emergent properties from the interaction of marketers and accountants whereby the whole is greater than the sum of the parts. The chapters in this volume seek to address this challenge.

About the Author

Robin Roslender is Professor of Accounting and Finance at the University of Dundee, UK, where he is also Director of Research in the School of Business. He pursues research interests in both mainstream and critical accounting, with most of his contributions in the field of managerial accounting. His work at the marketing/accounting interface dates back to the mid 1990s. Since 2008 he has been the Editor of the Journal of Human Resource Costing and Accounting.

Richard M.S. Wilson is Professor of Business Administration and Financial Management (Emeritus) at Loughborough University, UK. He holds degrees and professional qualifications in both marketing and accounting, has held academic and commercial appointments in each of these subject areas, and has published extensively on their interface as well as in the fields of marketing and accounting more broadly. He is the founding Editor of Accounting Education: an international journal (of which he is currently Editor-in-Chief).

About the Author

Hans Langeveld is Director of Biomass Research, a research and consulting firm focussing on the development and evaluation of biobased and bioenergy production. He has a background in applied agronomic and economic research and combines a pragmatic approach with a clear analytical view. The main focus of his work is feedstock availability and sustainability (GHG emissions and land use change), market analysis and production development of biobased and decentral bioenergy production chains. Formerly, he was Senior Researcher at Plant Research International, Wageningen University and Research Centre, and Researcher at the Centre for World Food Studies of the Free University Amsterdam, both in the Netherlands. He has been project leader of a number of large bioenergy projects and is (co-)author of over 50 scientific papers as well as books on the biobased economy and on dynamics of European farming systems.

Johan Sanders is Professor of Valorisation of Plant Production Chains at Wageningen University, and Research Leader in the Department of Agrotechnology and Food Sciences, both at Wageningen University and Research Centre. He has held several research and management positions at leading agro-chemical industries in the Netherlands where he developed a unique vision on the application of biorefinery technologies and development of a biobased economy for the Netherlands.

Marieke Meeusen is Senior Researcher in Sustainable Agricultural Chains in the Agricultural Economics Research Institute, Wageningen University and Research Centre, where she is Deputy Head of the Markets and Networks section, and leading a research programme on biobased economy. She is author of several studies on bioenergy and biobased economy.

To what extent does the success of economic statecraft depend on the magnitude of economic penalties and rewards?

In order to answer these questions, this book develops two analytic models: one weighs the threats economic statecraft poses to the Target’s Strategic Interests (TSI); while the other (stateness) assesses the degree to which the target state is insulated from domestic political pressures that senders attempt to generate or exploit. Through a series of carefully crafted case studies, including African apartheid and Japanese incentives to obtain the return of the Northern Territories, the authors demonstrate how their model can yield important policy insights in regards to contemporary economic sanctions and incentives cases, such as Iran and North Korea.
