The Iranian languages form the major eastern branch of the Indo-European group of languages, itself part of the larger Indo-Iranian family. Estimated to have between 150 and 200 million native speakers, the Iranian languages constitute one of the world’s major language families. This comprehensive volume offers a detailed overview of the principle languages which make up this group: Old Iranian, Middle Iranian, and New Iranian.

The Iranian Languages is divided into fifteen chapters. The introductory chapters by the editor present a general overview and a detailed discussion of the linguistic typology of Iranian. The individual chapters which follow are written by leading experts in the field. These provide the reader with concise, non-technical descriptions of a range of Iranian languages. Each chapter follows the same pattern and sequence of topics, taking the reader through the significant features not only of phonology and morphology but also of syntax; from phrase level to complex sentences and pragmatics.

Ample examples on all levels are provided with detailed annotation for the non-specialist reader. In addition, each chapter covers lexis, sociolinguistic and typological issues, and concludes with annotated sample texts.

'This volume provides for the first time a detailed overview of the Iranian languages that is up-to-date in its coverage and accessible to a wide range of readers, whether their interests are primarily in language structure, in history of language - in its own right or in conjunction with non-linguistic historical events - or in the processes and results of language contact.

Iranian languages are spoken from central Turkey in the west to westernmost China in the east, and include the national languages Persian (with its national varieties Dari in Afghanistan and Tajik in Tajikistan) and Pashto (in Afghanistan), other widely spoken languages such as Kurdish (mainly Iraq, Iran, and Turkey) and Balochi (mainly Pakistan), as well as languages on the verge of extinction (such as Parachi, with about 3500 speakers in northeastern Afghanistan). In the historical dimension, they span three millennia, from Avestan (the language of the holy scriptures of Zoroastrianism) and Old Persian (the language of Darius the Great) through important medieval languages like Sogdian to the present day. The volume includes detailed descriptions of modern languages from each of the four major divisions of the family (Northwestern, Southwestern, Northeastern, and Southeastern).

Unlike most earlier literature aimed primarily at specialists, this volume presents material in a widely accessible manner. And unlike much earlier literature which concentrates on phonology and morphology, the present volume, while doing full justice to these areas, also provides for the first time extensive comparative information on syntax. The syntax of the Iranian languages presents much that will be of interest to typologists and formal grammarians, with pride of place surely going to ergativity - the astonishing variations found on ergativity in Iranian languages is a goldmine for the comparative syntactician. But other phenomena will appeal equally, for instance the transformation of tense-aspect-mood systems across the Iranian languages, or the appearance of vigesimal (20-based) numeral systems.

The volume also provides extensive information on the historical and areal contexts in which the various Iranian languages have lived. Discussion of language contact of course includes loanwords, but also documents the shifts in structural patterns that have occurred as Iranian languages have come into contact with other languages, including languages with structures as different from Iranian as the Turkic languages.

The recent global financial crisis has made the inadequacies of the scientific state of economics and finance glaringly obvious, as these disciplines gave the false reassurance that such a self-destructive phenomenon could not happen. A similar phenomenon arose in the 1930’s, when the pitfalls of the dominant economic theories were sharply exposed. Since then, the same analytical framework, in its new versions, has revealed a huge number of other empirical and experimental failures.

On the other hand, the founders of the currently dominant theories in economics and finance (i.e. the standard paradigm) such as Walras (1834-1910), Modigliani (1918-2003) and Miller (1923-2000) have identified mathematical contradictions within their own foundational models, the root cause of which no one has yet discovered. The standard paradigm has thus lost the reason for its existence in the light of experience, experiments and logical rigour. This book identifies the heuristic cause of these external and internal contradictions of the standard paradigm and remedies these problems by offering a new paradigm which can explain and predict observed economic behaviour, and resolve the extant behavioural, empirical and experimental puzzles.

The new paradigm offers a dramatically improved understanding of economic behaviour at the micro as well as macro level of the economy within an over-arching framework comprising the real and the financial sectors. It does so in a rigorous but simple and clear way, using an axiomatic approach. It also offers policy recommendations on how the economy should be managed to avoid severe swings. It therefore is of great interest to scholars and practitioners in economics and finance.

About the Author

Avi Brisman (MFA, JD, PhD) is an assistant professor in the School of Justice Studies at Eastern Kentucky University in Richmond, KY (USA). His writing has appeared in such journals as Contemporary Justice Review,  Crime, Law and Social Change, Crime Media Culture, Critical Criminology, Journal of Contemporary Criminal Justice, Journal of Qualitative Criminal Justice and Criminology, Journal of Theoretical and Philosophical Criminology, Race and Justice, Theoretical Criminology, and Western Criminology Review, among others. He co-edited the Routledge International Handbook of Green Criminology (2013) with Professor Nigel South of the University of Essex, as well as Environmental Crime and Social Conflict: Contemporary and Emerging Issues with Professor South and Professor Rob White of the University of Tasmania (Ashgate, 2014).  

Nigel South is a professor in the Department of Sociology at the University of Essex, UK and an adjunct professor in the School of Justice at Queensland University of Technology. He serves on several editorial boards and is the European Editor of Critical Criminology. In 2013 he received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Society of Criminology, Division on Critical Criminology.

Applying Constructivist methodologies and moral theory, the author analyses a core set of moral dilemmas that ensnare decision-makers amongst state and non-state nuclear aspirants, as well as amongst states committed to preventing horizontal proliferation. The book shows that the character, structure and implications of these dilemmas have not yet been adequately understood or appreciated, and that such an understanding is necessary for an effective set of nonproliferation policies. Furthermore, it shows that the dilemmas’ force and political policy import are evident in the 'discourses' that diverse actors undertake to defend their nuclear choices, and how the dilemmas of nuclear aspirants are implicated in those of nuclear preventers. The author advocates a number of policy recommendations that reinforce some already made by scholars and experts but, more importantly, others that advise significantly different courses of action. The book reveals how the moral dilemmas of nuclear aspiration, avoidance, and prevention constitute the security dilemmas and paradoxes that comprise much of the 21st century security environment.

The Caucasus is a strategically and economically important region in contemporary global affairs. Western interest in the Caucasus has grown rapidly since 1991, fuelled by the admixture of oil politics, great power rivalry, ethnic separatism and terrorism that characterizes the region. This book argues that understanding the Soviet legacy in the region is critical to analysing both the new states of the Transcaucasus and the autonomous territories of the North Caucasus. It examines the impact of Soviet rule on the Caucasus, focusing in particular on the period from 1917 to 1955. Important questions covered include how the Soviet Union created ‘nations’ out of the diverse peoples of the North Caucasus; the true nature of the 1917 revolution; the role and effects of forced migration in the region; how over time the constituent nationalities of the region came to re-define themselves; and how Islamic radicalism came to assume the importance it continues to hold today.

Only looks at North Caucasus until 1950s

Overall it was an informative book, though a few caveats. First, the title is incorrect, in that it implies a history of the entire Soviet rule of the Caucasus. Instead Marshall focuses on the North Caucasus until the early 1950s, and only offers token reference to the South Caucasus, or the latter half of the Soviet era. This was disappointing, as that was the expressed intent behind this purchase. That said it is highly in depth on that topic, though a clearer title and purpose would have been nice. The writing at times is also quite stilted, and very dry in places, so makes for some dreary sections despite some very interesting topics and events to discuss. Overall a book worth reading if one wants to learn about the North Caucasus, but not something for the South Caucasus at all.
