Mind Stimulation Therapy is a tour de force integrating the empirically validated approaches of mindfulness and cognitive therapy. The premise of the book is that a concentration on client strengths rather than weaknesses will better prepare them to live as normal a life as possible. For an individual who has difficulty concentrating, the awareness and building on what they are capable of is far superior to the continual drumbeat of many people around them who primarily point to weaknesses.
Mindfulness and body-mind awareness relaxation training are used to help the clients focus on the here and now in a calm, productive way rather than focusing on their past, hallucinations or delusions. In addition, this is a treatment manual that includes numerous exercises designed to stimulate memory, cognitive awareness, attention, logical thinking and general knowledge. The workbook-like exercises are easily photocopied and given to clients in groups where each person works on the exercise at his/her own level. The exercises are also easily used in individual sessions. This is truly a book that treatment professionals can use with clients who have a wide range of problems.
The authors combine a wide range of knowledge into a unified treatment for individuals with schizophrenia and other disorders. In particular, individuals suffering from strokes and brain damage would benefit from the many exercises included in the book. The authors also include a section on the use of the model with substance use disorder populations. I recommend this book for anyone desiring to expand their clinical repertoire. No matter who your clients are, you will find yourself using elements of the useful information provided in this workbook.

Focusing on client strengths rather than deficits

This is a user-friendly treatment manual that provides clinicians with up-to-date information on various theories of Schizophrenia, learning theory, and treatment approaches. I have been using this manual for a few weeks now and what I love about it is the breadth of information it contains while still remaining user friendly. The first few chapters of the manual give an overview of Schizophrenia and cite research on the neurobiological components of the disease, paired with similar research on the effects of cognitive stimulation on the brain. The authors then make the case for why cognitive stimulation is valuable for patients with Schizophrenia and outline a specific three-part treatment approach that provides structure without rigidity. Someone could easily read the manual and implement any number of the ideas set forth: whether it be simply changing their attitude toward people with Schizophrenia or actually utilizing the recommended interventions. This manual is a nice blend of theory and concrete interventions that you can implement immediately in session, complete with handouts. It can be used with groups or individuals and adapted for use outside of the Schizophrenic population. I am definitely already utilizing some of the theory in individual counseling sessions and hope to start a Mind Stimulation Therapy group at the mental health agency where I work. Practical and Powerful

Dr Ahmed's innovative model has helped a significant number of patients with mild to major mental illness retain and recover much of their functioning. I'm so pleased that there is now finally a clear blueprint for replicating the MICST group and individual model complete with handouts and outlines. This model and now book will be of tremendous benefit to many suffering from schizophrenia, and other major mental illness.

About the Author

Carolyn Whitzman is Associate Professor in Urban Planning at the University of Melbourne. She is the author of The Handbook of Community Safety, Gender, and Violence Prevention (Earthscan, 2008) and has authored and contributed to several leading texts on safe cities.

Crystal Legacy is a Research Associate at the City Futures Research Centre at the University of New South Wales, Sydney. Crystal completed her PhD in urban planning from the University of Melbourne in 2010.

Caroline Andrew is the Director of the Centre on Governance, University of Ottawa, and is currently Chair of the Board of Women in Cities International. Her research interests are in the relationships between community-based equity seeking groups and municipal governments.

Fran Klodawsky is an Associate Professor in the Department of Geography and Environmental Studies at Carleton University, Ottawa. Her feminist geographic research and writing has focused on the intersections of identity, housing and homelessness, governance and social inequalities.

Margaret Shaw is a sociologist and criminologist who works as an independent consultant, and is currently a Fellow at the International Centre for the Prevention of Crime in Montreal, where she was Director of Analysis and Exchange from 1999 to 2011. She is a Board Member of Women in Cities International.

Kalpana Viswanath is an expert on gender and urban safety and has led the Gender Inclusive Cities Programme of Women in Cities International. She is also Senior Advisor to the Safe Cities Programme of Jagori in Delhi.

About the Author

Hannah Graham is an Associate Lecturer in Criminology and a member of the Criminology Research Unit in the School of Social Sciences at the University of Tasmania, Australia. Hannah’s research interests include innovative justice, desistance scholarship, penal cultures and practices, vulnerability and people with complex needs, alcohol & other drugs rehabilitation, and the ethics of euthanasia. Together with Rob White, she is co-author of Working with Offenders: A Guide to Concepts and Practices (Willan Publishing/Routledge, 2010). As part of the wider Innovative Justice international research initiative, Hannah has co-produced a website with Rob White, Katrina Clifford and key stakeholders in the field, www.innovativejustice.com

Rob White is a Professor of Criminology and Director of the Criminology Research Unit in the School of Social Sciences at the University of Tasmania, Australia. Rob has made extensive contributions in research, teaching and publishing across the areas of green criminology and transnational environmental justice, juvenile justice and youth studies, critical criminology, restorative justice and mainstream criminal justice. A SWIFT HALF-FULL/HALF-EMPTY ARGUMENT

Pubs, bars and clubs are social meeting places, which, in an ideal world, should be convivial and friendly. But as the authors of ‘Raising the Bar’ point out, nowhere is ideal, at least in Western culture – primarily the English speaking world -- where the consumption of alcohol is involved.

In his Forward, Alasdair Forysth from the Glasgow Centre for the Study of Violence observes that much violent or disorderly behaviour can be described as ‘alcohol-related’ and that the area where such violence and aggression appears to be the most obvious and the most public is the barroom environment.

This is an important book about an increasingly serious problem of aggression, violence and injury in and around public drinking establishments which, in an era of greater affluence and leisure, have become an essential component of the ‘nighttime economy’.

Authors, Kathryn Graham and Ross Homel have exhaustively researched the subject from a wealth of sources mainly in Canada, Australia and the UK pointing up the fact that the problem of alcohol-related violence leading to criminal behaviour is an international one.

The authors have aimed ultimately to provide directions and guidance for curtailing such violence through a variety of preventive and regulatory strategies, recognizing that the establishments concerned operate in diverse communities and cultures. Amid the diversity, however, there is one causative factor: alcohol abuse.

Graham & Homel offer interested readers the benefits of their 3 decades of research into the relationship between alcohol and violence. They’ve made a thorough, thoughtful and well substantiated analysis of the effects on behaviour of certain key factors: the drinking environment, staff behaviour and regulatory policies and practices, for example. Their work has had some considerable influence in formulating policies aimed at creating safer bars.

Their research methods centre on the practical, from direct observation and interviews with bar-room patrons and staff who have possibly been affected by bar-room violence either directly or indirectly. This is certainly a superior approach to the exclusively academic research project which relies on secondary sources and official statistics.

There are many real-life incidents featured, as well as case studies of how the problem has been tackled in various countries and the degrees of success achieved, for example, in community-based approaches or stricter – or more liberal – licensing schemes. The work will be most helpful for councillors and community groups grappling with new licensing legislation.

Possibly because of the subject matter, (on which most people cannot resist offering an opinion) ‘Raising the Bar’ is a very readable, indeed un-put-downable book. Apart from those already, mentioned, it should be required reading for anyone charged with the control, or management of this difficult problem: from police officers to premises managers though to medical and legal practitioners, policy makers, licensing authorities, government regulators and certainly, the producers and distributors of alcoholic beverages.

Criminologists, sociologists and social commentators should find it equally interesting and instructive. We can away realizing that the swift half-full/half-empty arguments will continue to rage and the work helps describe, in nine chapters, the problem with little likelihood that we will get much change until attitudes change.
