This book visits a range of textual forms including diary, novel, and picturebook to explore the relationship between second-generation memory and contemporary children’s literature. Ulanowicz argues that second-generation memory ― informed by intimate family relationships, textual mediation, and technology ― is characterized by vicarious, rather than direct, experience of the past. As such, children’s literature is particularly well-suited to the representation of second-generation memory, insofar as children’s fiction is particularly invested in the transmission and reproduction of cultural memory, and its form promotes the formation of various complex intergenerational relationships. Further, children’s books that depict second-generation memory have the potential to challenge conventional Western notions of selfhood and ethics. This study shows how novels such as Lois Lowry’s The Giver (1993) and Judy Blume’s Starring Sally J Freedman as Herself (1977) ― both of which feature protagonists who adapt their elders’ memories into their own mnemonic repertoires ― implicitly reject Cartesian notions of the unified subject in favor of a view of identity as always-already social, relational, and dynamic in character. This book not only questions how and why second-generation memory is represented in books for young people, but whether such representations of memory might be considered 'radical' or 'conservative'. Together, these analyses address a topic that has not been explored fully within the fields of children’s literature, trauma and memory studies, and Holocaust studies.

Rather than taking an all-encompassing approach that cover all contexts of leadership development, this book is based on research that guides the leadership teacher in designing a course that takes into account the specific context and needs of individual students, the purpose of the course, and how the course can be evaluated for its effectiveness.

Emphasising learner diversity, the book argues that the students’ specific cultural and educational contexts need to be taken into account when designing leadership programs. Although these courses are often taught outside of the regular curriculum, components of leadership can be found in the regular curriculum. Accordingly, this book helps the leadership teacher to integrate the leadership program with the regular curriculum through the use of guiding questions, quizzes, case studies, dilemmas, and other pedagogical strategies. It links research with practice, scaffolding teachers in understanding the content or issues described in each chapter, assisting them in building a fully defensible leadership program. A number of real life worked examples are also provided throughout each chapter as a practicable framework that can be used in teaching design for everyday units of work.

This book is a useful reference for researchers working in leadership as well as an essential tool for teachers developing leadership programs for students in primary, secondary or tertiary contexts.

The book argues that to become less vulnerable to macroeconomic shocks China would need to shift from an export-oriented development strategy to a domestic consumer-demand driven development strategy, and this would need to be supported by public sector reforms: strengthening of public service provisions in the health and the education sectors as well as expanding social security programs. The book discusses these problems, relates them to the economic literature and outlines the likely consequences.

This volume aims to break new ground: Intimacies explores the psychological terrain of intimacy in depthful ways without abandoning its sociohistorical context and the centrality of power dynamics. Drawing on a rich archive that includes the social sciences, feminism, queer studies, and psychoanalysis, the contributors examine:

changing cultures of intimacy
fluid and solid attachments and intimacies from hook ups, to sibling bonds, to erotic love
a politics of intimacy that may involve state enforced hierarchies, class, misrecognition, social exclusion and violence
embodied experiences of intimacy and dynamics of endings and loss
a pluralization of intimacies that challenge established ethical hierarchies

This volume aims to define the cutting edge of this emerging field of scholarship and politics. It challenges existing paradigms that assume rigid hierarchical approaches to relational life. Intimacies will be of interest for psychoanalysts and for students or scholars in sexualities, gender studies, family studies, feminism studies, queer studies, social class, cultural studies, and philosophy.
