About the Author

Monica R. Miller is Visiting Assistant Professor in the department of Religious Studies at Lewis & Clark College where her research focuses on the intersections of religion & material/popular culture. Miller currently serves as a Senior Research Fellow with The Institute for Humanist Studies (Washington, DC) and is co-chair of a new AAR consultation entitled Critical Approaches to the Study of Hip Hop and Religion. Miller is also principal investigator of a large scale survey project (Remaking Religion) in Portland, Oregon which explores religion in youth culture. She is the author of numerous articles and book chapters, and is currently at work on a second book entitled: Blacklandia: The Subtleties of Race in Portland.

Must have text for studies in religion and hip hop

Over the last 20 years, scholarship has coalesced at the intersection of religion and hip hop. But in that time, most of the texts have been methodologically thin and they have tended to focus on rap music alone. In this text, Miller addresses these two deficiencies in much academic work by offering a thorough theoretical and methodological road map for scholars to push studies in hip hop and religion in new directions.

More than simply engaging the data of hip hop, Miller playfully and thoughtfully turns the lens on religious studies theorization more broadly, and in doing so, the text contributes to contemporary conversations in religious studies across research foci. In particular, her "faithfully unfaithful" criticisms and wrestlings with Anthony B. Pinn's theory of African American religion as a "quest for complex subjectivity" not only sets Miller apart as a brilliant theoretician, but pushes Pinn's theory forward for ongoing use and engagement for years to come. Definitely a worthwhile contribution, and though the price is high, the payoff is palpable.

About the Author
