About the Author

Mick Healey is Professor of Geography, University of Gloucestershire, UK, and Senior Adviser for Geography for the National Subject Centre for Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences. He is a National Teaching Fellow and Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and has twice been awarded the Journal of Geography in Higher Education Biennial Award for Promoting Excellence in Teaching and Learning.

Eric Pawson is Professor of Geography, University of Canterbury, New Zealand. He is a teaching award winner, a former Head of Department, and member of the Social Science Panel of the Royal Society of New Zealand’s Marsden Research Fund.

Michael Solem is Educational Affairs Director at the Association of American Geographers, where he directs several federally funded initiatives supporting geography education in the United States and internationally. His research (with Ken Foote) on geography faculty development was recognized by the Journal of Geography in Higher Education’s Biennial Award for Promoting Excellence in Teaching and Learning.

Haydn Washington is an environmental scientist and writer with 35 years' experience. He has worked as a plant ecologist, a CSIRO scientist, an environmental consultant, and is currently a Visiting Fellow at the Institute of Environmental Studies at the University of New South Wales, Australia. This is his fifth book on environmental issues and he is also the lead author of Climate Change Denial: Heads in the Sand (Earthscan from Routledge 2011).

Easy to understand, very practical and helpful for teachers

This could be the most easy to understand linguistics book I have ever read. The authors bring many practical examples to demonstrate those abstract linguistic terms. Also, it emphasizes the sociolinguistic and sociocultural way to think about language and language teaching. My favorite part is the practical strategies at the end of each part and the case studies at the end of each chapter. They give you a much clearer blueprint about why you need to learn linguitics as a teacher and how you can use it to help your students.
Even though there's some errors and inappropriate parts, I still recommend those who need some basic and practical ideas about linguistics to read this. It is a very good one to have an overview and start learning linguistics. Also, it is a good one if you do not like to read too much abstract and hard to understand papers.
