This book is incredible.

This book is incredible. Ms. Goldman has taken her practical information and guidance on children and grief and expanded and updated it. It is so useful. It has really helped me understand loss issues in my own family involving diversity, immigration, and even issues involving technology, their big impact on children, and how we can help them. The children's bibliography is so thorough and complete. I was amazed at the new books and websites available for kids on all of the loss topics discussed. Thanks to Ms. Goldman once again for sharing and making available such in-depth information and guidance on children and grief.

This new edition of Life and Loss is wonderful. It offers great advice and practices to help children who face so many complicated issues in today's world. It also supplies a huge variety of additional resources. I know it will help me in my work with children and to be more aware of the diversity of issues and identities our children face. I highly recommend it to everyone!

Social media is restructuring urban practices–through ad-hoc experimentation, commercial software development, and communities of participation. This book is the first to consider how practices contained within social media are situated within a larger genealogy of public space, including theories of communal identity, civitas and democracy, the fete, and self-expression. Through empirical research, the actual social practices of participants of networked publics are described and analyzed.

Documenting how online counterpublics use the Internet to transmit classified photos, mobilize activists, and challenge the status quo, Tierney argues that online activities do not stop in online conversations; they are physically grounded through mobile GPS coordinates which are then transformed into activities in physical space―the street, the plaza, the places where people have traditionally gathered to demonstrate and express their opinions publicly.

The book is divided into two parts. The first part of the book explores the theories of Donald Winnicott and Jacques Lacan: the matrimony on the stage of politics between the ‘good-enough mother’ and the Symbolic Father which inaugurates the story of democracy’s ‘fantastic family’. The second part presents the ‘fantastic families’ of selected countries such as Hungary, Italy, and the world community to explain the proliferation of cosmogony projects, and to document the failure of the political elites to offer a satisfactory performance of their maternal and paternal functions.

Psychoanalytic Reflections on Politics: Fatherlands in mothers’ hands presents a new way of considering the art of politics, based on the understanding that people perceive reality through imagination and unconscious fantasy. This volume examines the promotion and defense of democracy in the Americas. Taking the Inter-American Democratic Charter (IADC) of 2001 as a baseline, it charts the evolution of the issue over the past decade.

Although it considers historical antecedents, the main focus of the book is on key instances of promotion and defense of democracy in the Western hemisphere since the adoption of the IADC. It analyzes democratic norms, norm enforcement mechanisms and how they work in practice. Special attention is paid to the 2009 Honduras coup, the issues raised by it and the debates that surrounded it, as this was the first instance in which a member state was suspended in accordance with the IADC. Three central themes guide the analysis: the nature of challenges to democracy in Latin America; the role of regional organizations as democracy promoters; and the transformation of Inter-American relations.

The book unveils the key achievements and limitations of the OAS in the field and will be of great interest to students and scholars of democratization, US-Latin American relations, international relations of Latin-America and international organizations.

This book very competently assesses the promotion and defense of democracy in the Americas focusing on the evolution of the issue since the Inter-American Democratic Charter of 2001.  Other studies have dealt with the same issue, but this book is helpful in surveying all recent cases with particular attention to the 2009 case of Honduras.  Another contribution is the analysis of the weaknesses and strengths of the Organization of American States (OAS) approach as well as that of other regional and global organizations.  Chapter 1 sets the context for regional democracy promotion, chapter 2 traces the emergence of the OAS democratic paradigm, and chapter 3 deals with the Inter-American Democratic Charter of 2001.  Chapter 4 assesses application of the OAS democratic paradigm in multiple cases in the 21st century, and chapter 5 focuses exclusively on the case of Honduras.  Chapter 6 assesses the future of the OAS democratic paradigm, and chapter 7 provides a conclusion.  The book is well written and organized, making it attractive for undergraduate students as well as graduate students and professionals.

About the Author

Jorge Heine is CIGI Professor of Global Governance at the Balsillie School of International Affairs, Wilfrid Laurier University, and a Wilson Center Global Fellow. He is a past Vice-President of the International Political Science Association (IPSA) and has held visiting appointments at the universities of Konstanz, Heidelberg, Oxford, Paris and Stanford. He is a former Chilean Ambassador to India, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka (2003-2007) and to South Africa (1994-1999).

Brigitte Weiffen is a Lecturer in the Department of Politics and Public Administration at the University of Konstanz. She was previously a research associate at University of Tübingen and the University of Bonn and has been a visiting researcher at the Centre for International Governance Innovation, Waterloo and at the Institute of International Relations, University of São Paulo.

The challenges that space poses for political theory are profound. Yet until now, the exploration and utilization of space has generally reflected – but not challenged – the political patterns and impulses which characterized twentieth-century politics and International Relations. This edited volume analyses a number of controversial policies, and contentious strategies which have promoted space activities under the rubric of exploration and innovation, militarization and weaponization, colonization and commercialization. It places these policies and strategies in broader theoretical perspective in two key ways. Firstly, it engages in a reading of the discourses of space activities: exposing their meaning-producing practices; uncovering the narratives which convey certain space strategies as desirable, inevitable and seamless. Secondly, the essays suggest ways of understanding, and critically engaging with, the effects of particular space policies.

The essays here seek to ‘bring back space’ into the realm of International Relations discourse, from which it has been largely removed, marginalized and silenced. The various chapters do this by highlighting how activities in outer space are always connected to earth-bound practices and performances of the every day. Natalie Bormann teaches at the Department of Politics at Northeastern University, Boston, USA.  Previously she held a position at the Watson Insititute for International Studies, Brown University.  She is the author of National Missile Defence and the Politics of US Identity: A Poststructuralist Critique.

Michael Sheehan is Professor of International Relations at the University of Wales, Swansea. His publications include The International Politics of Space; International Security: An Analytical Survey; National and International Security; Balance of Power: History and Theory; The Arms Race; and Arms Control: Theory and Practice.
