This careful and detailed analysis examines the strategic thinking and diplomatic discourse which underlay the whole period, and in particular of the succession of efforts to establish a frontier, which eventually brought the period to a close without a major confrontation being provoked. Based on relevant records in the PRO and the British Library, as well as private papers, press comment, parliamentary debates and other contemporary accounts, Sir Martin Ewans provides a ‘history of thought' of this crucial period in Central Asia. He provides an insight into the manner in which issues of war and peace were handled in the 19th Century and a fascinating case study of a great power relationship prior to the First World War. About the Author
Sir Martin Ewans is a former diplomat, who in the course of his career was closely concerned with Central Asian and South Asian affairs, including postings in India, Pakistan and Afghanistan. Since retiring, he has written a number of books, including two on Afghanistan.

Excellent study of a crucial subject in South/ Central Asian history, which continues to haunt us today.

I absolutely agree wIth the first reviewer. However, since this is a review of the entire product, I'll look at the content first. Sir Martin Ewans presents an excellent study that addresses the definition of the border between the British Raj and Afghanistan in the late 19th century. This is an important subject that continues to haunt relations between Afghanistan and Pakistan today--and hence has great bearing on American policy in South/Central Asia. Since this is a specialized study, those unfamiliar with the subject may want to start out with a more general study of Afghanistan's recent history or the foreign policy of the British Raj. The author has a unique perspective, having spent much time in the region as a British diplomat in the region. However, poor quality maps in the Kindle version significantly mar the digital reading experience. As a leader in promoting digital books, I find it hard to believe that Amazon would settle for such amateurism. Two stars for presentation of the digital product.

Kindle Version Map Disappointment

The maps were the main reason (really, the only reason) I bought this. I was intrigued by the line above: "Its significance lies not just in the 11 maps that bring to the forefront the complexities of terrain and political boundaries...".
Sadly, the maps cannot be seen in the "Look Inside" feature, so I had to gamble and rent the Kindle version, only to find out that the maps are very very small and of such poor quality that no amount of zooming makes them much better. The first map in particular, "The Russian Advances in Central Asia" looks like it could be absolutely superb, but everything is completely unreadable. Though this book looks to be a goldmine of info, I'm seriously considering returning it for a refund.
