Bought it for class but enjoying it for personal reading time

This book challenges me in all the right ways. It is thorough and grounded in research. The range of topics and authors keeps it interesting.
I bought this as assigned reading for a course but find myself picking it up, reading ahead, and reflecting on the content far more than most of my reading material.
Highly recommended.

To date, the most comprehensive volume on urban education as a developing field of inquiry. A useful interdisciplinary survey of the historical contours, pressing contemporary issues, and gaps in the literature on urban education - a good choice in its entirety for Introduction to Urban Education courses, with essential material for Foundations of Education, Teacher Education, Education Policy and Educational Leadership courses. Contributing authors represent nearly every subfield in education, and the text notably includes underrepresented discourses of psychology and queer identities in urban settings. One limitation is the volume is it's heavy U.S. focus, future editions might include international perspectives on theory and practice for education in urban spaces.

Handbook Is Excellent Resource

Urban education is often a code word for African American, low socioeconomic populated schools. Furthermore, it is frequently used disrespectfully of that very population. But this handbook is a valuable resource that has compiled a collection of articles on the subject that includes empirical data across many urban education venues. It is a handbook.
