Drawing on a detailed and systematic comparative survey of existing records of Tibetan funerary practices, including historical travel accounts, anthropological and ethnographic literature, Tibetan texts and academic studies, it demonstrates that there is no standard form of funeral in Tibetan Buddhism, although certain elements are common.

The structure of the book follows the twin trajectories of benefiting the deceased and protecting survivors; in the process, it reveals a rich and complex panoply of activities, some handled by religious professionals and others by lay persons. This information is examined to identify similarities and differences in practices, and the degree to which Tibetan Buddhist funeral practices are consistent with the mortuary rituals of other forms of Buddhism. A number of elements in these death rites which at first appear to be unique to Tibetan Buddhism may only be ‘Tibetan’ in their surface characteristics, while having roots in practices which pre-date the transmission of Buddhism to Tibet.

Filling a gap in the existing literature on Tibetan Buddhism, this book poses research challenges that will engage future scholars in the field of Buddhism, Tibetan Buddhism and Anthropology.

This book systematically explores the complex dynamics that shape contemporary Japanese-Chinese relations. In particular, it analyses the so-called ‘revival’ of nationalism in post-Cold War Japan, its causality in redefining Japan’s external policy orientations, and its impact on the atmosphere of the bilateral relationship. Further, by adopting a neoclassical realist model of state behaviour and preferences, Lai Yew Meng examines two highly visible bilateral case studies: the Japanese-Chinese debacle over prime ministerial visits to Yasukuni Shrine, and the multi-dimensional dispute in the East China Sea which comprises the Senkaku/Diaoyudao territorial row, alleged Chinese maritime incursions, and bilateral competition for energy resources. Through these examples, this book explores whether nationalism really matters; when, and under what circumstances nationalism becomes most salient; and the extent to which the emotional dimensions of nationalism manifest most profoundly in Japanese state-elites’ policy decision-making.

This timely book will be of great interest to students and scholars of both Japanese and Chinese politics, as well as those interested in international relations, nationalism, foreign policy and security studies more broadly.

James McLeskey is a Professor in the School of Special Education, School Psychology, and Early Childhood Studies at the University of Florida. He has extensive experience in teacher education and professional development activities related to providing high quality, inclusive services for students with disabilities.

Nancy Waldron is a Professor in the School of Special Education, School Psychology, and Early Childhood Studies at the University of Florida. Nancy is a Professor-in-Residence at P.K. Yonge Developmental Research School, a Fellow of the American Psychological Association (APA)-Division of School Psychology, and has held various accreditation and credentialing leadership positions in the National Association of School Psychologists (NASP).

Fred Spooner is a Professor in the Department of Special Education, and Child Development. He is known for this writing in the area of severe disabilities, specifically in teaching academic content to this population.

"Gastón Epinosa and his coauthors have written a remarkably insightful book on key determinants of the vote in the 2008 presidential elections. In examining the complex relationship between religion, race, ethnicity, gender and cultural values, the authors challenge numerous conventional clichés about the role of religion in American politics and demonstrate how Barack Obama was able to close the electoral "God gap" that used to favor the Republican party. Gastón Espinosa is the Arthur V. Stoughton associate professor of religious studies at Claremont McKenna College and co-editor of the Columbia University Press Series in Religion and Politics. He served as research director of the Pew Charitable Trusts-funded Hispanic Churches in American Public Life research and Latino Religions and Politics national survey. His books include Religion, Race, and the American Presidency (2008), Religion and the American Presidency: George Washington to George W. Bush with Commentary and Sources (2009), and Latino Religions and Politics in American Public Life (forthcoming).

the binding falls apart pretty fast so you have to be very gentle with ...

Book is missing the pull-out keyboard and does not come with perforated workbook pages. I had to make photo copies the entire semester. Additionally, the binding falls apart pretty fast so you have to be very gentle with it.

I would not recommend this for those who take notes on textbook pages because the paper is very glossy.

Save yourself the time and buy it from your school's library.
