Nuclear nonproliferation and disarmament have returned to the top of the international political agenda. The issue assumes particular importance in regard to NATO, given that some 150–200 US tactical nuclear weapons (TNWs) are still present in five countries belonging to the Alliance (Belgium, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands and Turkey). The past few years have seen animated debate in the United States and Europe on the role of such weapons in the current scenario of international security, and whether they can be further reduced or completely removed from Europe.

Bringing together leading scholars and analysts of TNW with country-specific competences, this volume improves our understanding of this debate by providing in-depth analysis of the presence, role, perceived value and destiny of TNWs in Europe. The book addresses the issue in a systematic manner, taking into account the perspectives of all main actors directly or indirectly involved in the debate. This approach provides new and important insights that can inform both theoretical and policy work on a very critical and timely international issue, especially during the ongoing review of NATO's deterrence and defence posture.

About the Author

Jochen Bundschuh (Germany, 1960), finished his PhD on numerical modeling of heat transport in aquifers in Tübingen in 1990. He is working in geothermics, subsurface and surface hydrology and integrated water resources management, and connected disciplines. From 1993 to 1999 he served as an expert for the German Agency of Technical Cooperation (GTZ) and as a long-term professor for the DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service) in Argentine. From 2001 to 2008 he worked within the framework of the German governmental cooperation (Integrated Expert Program of CIM; GTZ/BA) as adviser in mission to Costa Rica at the Instituto Costarricense de Electricidad (ICE). Here, he assisted the country in evaluation and development of its huge low-enthalpy geothermal resources for power generation. Since 2005, he is an affiliate professor of the Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm, Sweden. In 2006, he was elected Vice-President of the International Society of Groundwater for Sustainable Development ISGSD. From 2009 - 2011 he was visiting professor at the Department of Earth Sciences at the National Cheng Kung University, Tainan, Taiwan. By the end of 2011 he was appointed as professor in hydrogeology at the University of Southern Queensland, Toowoomba, Australia where he leads where he leads a working group of 26 researchers working on the wide field of water resources and low/middle enthalpy geothermal resources, water and wastewater treatment and sustainable and renewable energy resources (http://www.ncea.org.au/groundwater). In November 2012, Prof. Bundschuh was appointed as president of the newly established Australian Chapter of the International Medical Geology Association (IMGA).
 Dr. Bundschuh is author of the books “Low-Enthalpy Geothermal Resources for Power Generation" (2008) (CRC Press/Balkema – Taylor & Francis Group) and “Introduction to the Numerical Modeling of Groundwater and Geothermal Systems: Fundamentals of Mass, Energy and Solute Transport in Poroelastic Rocks”. He is editor of the books “Geothermal Energy Resources for Developing Countries” (2002), “Natural Arsenic in Groundwater” (2005), and the two-volume monograph “Central America: Geology, Resources and Hazards” (2007), “Groundwater for Sustainable Development” (2008), “Natural Arsenic in Groundwater of Latin America (2008). Dr. Bundschuh is editor of the book series “Multiphysics Modeling”, “Arsenic in the Environment”, and “Sustainable Energy Developments” (all CRC Press/Balkema – Taylor & Francis Group).

Jan Hoinkis  (Germany 1957), holds a degree in chemistry and a doctorate in the field of thermodynamics from Technical University Karlsruhe. He has about 7 years work experience in chemical industry being head of a group for process development. Since 1996 he is professor at Karlsruhe University of Applied Sciences where he is teaching and conducting research in the field of process engineering in combination with sensor/control systems. He is specialised in the areas of water treatment and water recycling by use of membrane technologies. He has co-ordinated a variety of national and international R&D projects in co-operation with research institutes and companies among them EU funded projects (AsiaProEco, LIFE, FP7). Since 2008 he is scientific director of the Institute of Applied Research at the Karlsruhe University of Applied Sciences. He is author of several peer-reviewed scientific publications and contributions to international conferences.

Extra-ordinary book

This is an extra-ordinary book that meets the need of a wide fraction of the research workers who are interested in water sciences. A real serious effort is done by the right people in this precious book. I learn from that book as much as I have learnt from the great books I have had the opportunity to read the last few years. Many thanks to the authors who show high-end willingness to cut with a major double-problem the humanity is facing, namely the fresh water shortage and the energy deficit.

Bottici and Challand disentangle such a process of myth-making both in the West and in Muslim majority countries, and call for a renewed critical attitude towards it. About the Author

Kim M. Williams is Lecturer and Research Associate in the Tourism and Hospitality Research Unit (THRU) at La Trobe University. Her research background is concerned with human resources issues, with a prime focus on professional development and training. She is also interested in fashion, heritage and wine tourism.

Jennifer Laing is a Senior Lecturer in Tourism and Events in the Tourism and Hospitality Research Unit (THRU) at La Trobe University. Her research interests include travel narratives; the role of events in society and heritage tourism. She has co-written books with Warwick Frost on the influence of books on travel and commemorative events.

Warwick Frost is an Associate Professor in Tourism and Events in the Tourism and Hospitality Research Unit (THRU) at La Trobe University. His research interests include heritage, events, nature-based attractions and the interaction between media, popular culture and tourism. He has co-written books with Jennifer Laing on the influence of books on travel and commemorative events.

Bought it for class but enjoying it for personal reading time

This book challenges me in all the right ways. It is thorough and grounded in research. The range of topics and authors keeps it interesting.

I bought this as assigned reading for a course but find myself picking it up, reading ahead, and reflecting on the content far more than most of my reading material.

To date, the most comprehensive volume on urban education as a developing field of inquiry. A useful interdisciplinary survey of the historical contours, pressing contemporary issues, and gaps in the literature on urban education - a good choice in its entirety for Introduction to Urban Education courses, with essential material for Foundations of Education, Teacher Education, Education Policy and Educational Leadership courses. Contributing authors represent nearly every subfield in education, and the text notably includes underrepresented discourses of psychology and queer identities in urban settings. One limitation is the volume is it's heavy U.S. focus, future editions might include international perspectives on theory and practice for education in urban spaces.

Handbook Is Excellent Resource

Urban education is often a code word for African American, low socioeconomic populated schools. Furthermore, it is frequently used disrespectfully of that very population. But this handbook is a valuable resource that has compiled a collection of articles on the subject that includes empirical data across many urban education venues. It is a handbook.
