This careful and detailed analysis examines the strategic thinking and diplomatic discourse which underlay the whole period, and in particular of the succession of efforts to establish a frontier, which eventually brought the period to a close without a major confrontation being provoked. Based on relevant records in the PRO and the British Library, as well as private papers, press comment, parliamentary debates and other contemporary accounts, Sir Martin Ewans provides a ‘history of thought' of this crucial period in Central Asia. He provides an insight into the manner in which issues of war and peace were handled in the 19th Century and a fascinating case study of a great power relationship prior to the First World War. An important contribution to the study of Asian history, Tsarist Russia, imperial history and the history of British India, this book will also be of interest in India and Pakistan as a study of the events that led to the definition and consolidation of their northern frontiers.

About the Author

Sir Martin Ewans is a former diplomat, who in the course of his career was closely concerned with Central Asian and South Asian affairs, including postings in India, Pakistan and Afghanistan. Since retiring, he has written a number of books, including two on Afghanistan.

Excellent study of a crucial subject in South/ Central Asian history, which continues to haunt us today.

I absolutely agree wIth the first reviewer. However, since this is a review of the entire product, I'll look at the content first. Sir Martin Ewans presents an excellent study that addresses the definition of the border between the British Raj and Afghanistan in the late 19th century. This is an important subject that continues to haunt relations between Afghanistan and Pakistan today--and hence has great bearing on American policy in South/Central Asia. Since this is a specialized study, those unfamiliar with the subject may want to start out with a more general study of Afghanistan's recent history or the foreign policy of the British Raj. The author has a unique perspective, having spent much time in the region as a British diplomat in the region. However, poor quality maps in the Kindle version significantly mar the digital reading experience. As a leader in promoting digital books, I find it hard to believe that Amazon would settle for such amateurism. Two stars for presentation of the digital product.

Kindle Version Map Disappointment

The maps were the main reason (really, the only reason) I bought this. I was intrigued by the line above: "Its significance lies not just in the 11 maps that bring to the forefront the complexities of terrain and political boundaries...".

Sadly, the maps cannot be seen in the "Look Inside" feature, so I had to gamble and rent the Kindle version, only to find out that the maps are very very small and of such poor quality that no amount of zooming makes them much better. The first map in particular, "The Russian Advances in Central Asia" looks like it could be absolutely superb, but everything is completely unreadable. Though this book looks to be a goldmine of info, I'm seriously considering returning it for a refund.

About the Author

Hillary Potter is Associate Professor of Ethnic Studies at the University of Colorado at Boulder. She holds a B.A. and a Ph.D. in sociology from the University of Colorado at Boulder and an M.A. in criminal justice from the John Jay College of Criminal Justice, New York. Dr. Potter’s research has focused on the intersections of race, gender, and class as they relate to crime and violence, and she is currently researching Black women’s use of violence in response to abusive intimate partners; men’s use of violence; and antiviolence activism in Black and Latina/o communities. Dr. Potter is the author of Battle Cries: Black Women and Intimate Partner Abuse (2008) and the editor of Racing the Storm: Racial Implications and Lessons Learned from Hurricane Katrina (2007).

The authors examine claims that the future of Indian agriculture is in rain-fed farming supported by small water harvesting. They question whether water-abundant eastern India could become the granary of India, through a groundwater revolution with the right policy inputs. In the process, they look at the less researched aspect of the food security challenge, which is land scarcity in eastern India. The book analyzes the physical, economic and social impacts of large-scale adoption of micro irrigation systems, using a farming system approach for north Gujarat. Through an economic valuation of the multiple use benefits from tank systems in western Orissa, it shows how value of water from large public irrigation systems could be enhanced.

The book also looks at the reasons for the limited success in bringing about the much needed institutional reforms in canal irrigation for securing higher productivity and equity using case studies of Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra. Finally it addresses how other countries in the developing world, particularly Sub-Saharan Africa could learn from Indian experience.

Presenting a fundamental re-thinking of Asian theology, this book focuses on theological indigenization in Asia in light of the postcolonial theory of resistance advanced by Homi K. Bhabha, among others.

Two types of anti-colonialist resistance within Asian theologies are identified and interrogated. The first is nationalistic in kind, operating from a theological language that is binaristic and oppositional. The second is illustrated by that which was mounted by the three Chinese Christian thinkers whose indigenous theologies are analysed in this book as case studies. This second kind, postcolonial in its character, is characterized by collaboration rather than antagonistic binarism. In spite of much dissimilarity between these two kinds of resistance, the book argues that they are similarly anti-colonialist, and both can be equally valid in resisting colonial forces. Given that the binarism and antagonism imbedded in the Asian theological movement are historically contingent, and that the sole reliance on this resistance has made the movement self-ensnaring, the book suggests that the Asian theological movement widen its choice of colonial-resistant strategies.

Drawing attention to the otherwise subtle politics of the Asian theological indigenization discourse, this book addresses the relationship between postcolonialism and Asia contextual theology, and is of interest to students and scholars of Asian Religion and Philosophy.

Need for Concrete Ethical Analysis of Global Climate Change

This book is a must-read for anyone, professionals or lay persons alike, who care about the most pressing existential problem confronting humankind, namely, global climate change. The book deals with the ethics of climate change from the stand point of nations' policies, economics, science, laws, and ethics. The book examines the 35 year history of contentious debate in the global scientific community, and shows how the most important factor, namely, ethics, has been for the most absent from the debates. Further, Dr. Brown shows that not only does ethics need to play a substantial role in global climate change negotiations but that it needs to be discussed at concrete levels appropriate to the particular problem at hand. While most other books on ethics of climate change have not tailored analysis down to concrete levels and, therefore, provided needed relevance, Dr.Brown is very concrete so the reader is guided through the relevancy of scientific, economic, and policy issues with concrete ethical theory instead of left floundering to make sense of abstract ethics and what it might or might not apply to.
