About the Author
Kevin Wehr is associate professor of Sociology at the California State University, Sacramento, where he specializes in criminology and environmental and cultural sociology. He received his PhD in 2002 and his MS in 1998 from the University of Wisconsin, Madison, and his BA in 1994 from the University of California Santa Cruz. His other works include America’s Fight over Water: The Environmental and Political Effects of Large-Scale Water Systems, Hermes on Two Wheels: The Sociology of Bicycle Messengers, and DIY: The Search for Control and Self-Reliance in the 21st Century.
Elyshia Aseltine is an assistant professor in the Department of Sociology, Anthropology, and Criminal Justice at Towson University in Maryland. Her research focuses on punishment and inequality in the United States and Africa.

Very informative and good one stop resource.

Beyond the Prison Industrial Complex (PIC) is a social science text book. Each chapter has vocabulary terms in bold, and there are discussion questions at the end of each section. The book defines the PIC, and explains social functions of crime and prisons. The authors use theoretical framing shown through the lenses of Marxism, Feminism, post-modernism, and Critical Race Theory. It covers issues of race, class, gender, and political orientation that surround the criminal justice system. The book also outlines social structure inside prison institutions, and explains how overcrowding and poor living conditions influence recidivism and continued crime. It also includes information on how much money is spent on prison and the costs it has on community.
I feel the book takes a one-sided political stance on some issues. For example, when discussing the loss and restriction of voting rights the authors write, “In fact, if the disenfranchised had been allowed to vote in 2000, Al Gore would likely have served as the nation’s President and the Democrats would have been the majority in the Senate.” That may be true but I think it is an unnecessary statement and a good way to turn away potential readers that are attempting to have an open mind about something they may not already agree with.
When discussing framing alternatives (reform & revolution) the book does provide liberal and conservative areas of agreement. Alternatives for the current system involve Evidence Based Practices, social restructuring inside and outside prisons, and prison abolition. It is informative and offers a basic understanding of the PIC, and it helps point readers in many directions who may want to further their research. Overall, I really enjoyed reading this book.

Great book; provided different alternatives to change our countries overcrowded prison system. It would work if our country like all the others, wasn't ran by the corrupt and skewed ideologies of the ones in power. Along with our countries selfish behaviors that are instilled to us at birth.
